The Liberation of the Arjuna Trees

The story · English
Long ago, the two sons of Kuvera, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, grew arrogant in their celestial status. They traveled to the beautiful gardens of Kailasa, where the Mandakini river flows. There, they drank the intoxicating liquor Varuni and, blinded by lust and wine, entered a flowering forest. Accompanied by women who sang songs, they behaved like elephants among young female elephants, playing recklessly in the water. By chance, the great sage Narada arrived and saw them in this state. He immediately recognized that the two Guhyakas had lost their way and were consumed by a darkness of the soul.
The women, frightened by Narada’s presence and fearing a curse, quickly dressed themselves. But the two sons of Kuvera were so drunk that they stayed naked, unconcerned. Seeing them drunk and blind with the pride of wealth, Narada decided to curse them for their own good. He spoke of the vanity of the body, which is perishable and eventually becomes ash and worms. He explained that poverty is actually a blessing for the arrogant, for it strips away the pride of the flesh and forces a soul to seek the truth. To cure them of their madness and lust, Narada resolved to remove their darkness.
Narada cursed them, saying, 'Though you are sons of a guardian of the world, you are so sunk in darkness and pride that you do not even know you are naked. You shall both become stationary trees.' However, out of mercy, he added that even as trees they would keep their memory by his grace. He promised that after a hundred divine years, once they had the presence of Vasudeva, they would return to heaven, now filled with devotion. After speaking these words, the sage departed for the hermitage of Narayana. Nalakuvara and Manigriva were thus transformed into the two Arjuna trees, standing side by side, waiting for the day of their rescue.
To fulfill the words of the sage, Krishna eventually arrived where the two trees stood. He was a young child, bound by a rope to a heavy wooden mortar. He went between the two Arjuna trees, dragging the mortar behind him. As he passed through, the mortar turned crosswise and stuck against the trees, and Krishna gave a mighty tug. The massive trees were uprooted with a thunderous crash, their branches shaking the earth. From the fallen trees emerged the two Guhyakas, now free. They bowed their heads to the Lord of all worlds, joining their hands in deep reverence.
Nalakuvara and Manigriva praised Krishna, recognizing him as the Supreme Person, the master of the senses, and the eternal Vishnu. Calling themselves servants of his servants, they asked his leave to go, offering their speech, hearing, and sight to his service. Krishna smiled and told them that the compassionate sage Narada had planned this to save them from their own blindness. He explained that the sight of a pure soul brings liberation, just as the sun removes darkness. He told them to go home, for the devotion they longed for was now theirs. The two Guhyakas circled him, bowed once more, and departed toward the north.
