The Story of Sakuntala

Mahabharata, Adi Parva 71

The story · English

King Dushmanta arrived at the hermitage of the sage Kanwa. He left his retinue at the entrance and entered alone, but found the dwelling empty. When he called out to see who was there, his voice echoed back through the silence. Soon, a beautiful young woman dressed as the daughter of an ascetic emerged from the abode. She welcomed the king with the customary respects, offering him a seat and water to wash his feet. After inquiring about his health and peace, she asked the king what commands he had for her. Dushmanta explained that he had come to worship the highly blessed Rishi Kanwa and asked the maiden where the illustrious sage had gone.

Sakuntala answered that her father had left the asylum to gather fruit and told the king to wait a moment for his return. As Dushmanta looked at her, he was struck by her perfect symmetry, her sweet smile, and the grace of her youth. He asked her who she was and why she had come to the woods. He told her that she had stolen his heart at the first glance and that he desired to learn everything about her. Smiling, the maiden replied that she was the daughter of the virtuous and high-souled ascetic Kanwa. This answer surprised the king, for he knew that Kanwa was a celibate of rigid vows.

Dushmanta questioned how she could be the daughter of a man who had drawn up his seed. He told her that while Dharma himself might fall from his course, a sage of such rigid vows would not. He asked her to dispel this great doubt. Sakuntala told him that she would recount what she had learned about her birth from the sage himself. She explained that once, another Rishi had asked about her origin, and Kanwa had told him the story of Viswamitra. Viswamitra had been engaged in such severe penances that Indra, the chief of the celestials, feared the ascetic's blazing energy would hurl him down from his high seat in heaven.

To protect his throne, Indra summoned the celestial Apsara Menaka. He commanded her to tempt Viswamitra and frustrate his austerities using her beauty, youth, and arts. Menaka expressed her fear to Indra, noting that Viswamitra was short-tempered and possessed immense power. She reminded Indra that Viswamitra had created a second world and numerous stars in his anger and could make the earth quake with a single stamp of his foot. She worried that she might be burnt by his wrath, as his eyes were like the sun and moon and his tongue like Yama. However, she agreed to obey the command if Indra provided a plan for her protection.

Menaka suggested that the god of wind, Marut, should rob her of her dress while she played before the Rishi, and that the god of love, Manmatha, should assist her. She also asked Marut to bring fragrances from the woods to tempt the sage. Indra arranged these things, and Menaka entered the retreat of Viswamitra. As she began to sport before him, Marut stole her moon-white garments. Menaka pretended to be bashful and annoyed, running to catch her attire. Viswamitra, beholding her divested of her robes and seeing her faultless features, was possessed with lust and invited her to be his companion.

Viswamitra and Menaka spent a long time together in each other's company. From this union, the Rishi begat a daughter named Sakuntala. As her pregnancy advanced, Menaka went to the banks of the river Malini in the mountains of Himavat. There she gave birth to the child and left the newborn infant on the riverbank before departing. The infant lay in the solitude of a forest full of lions and tigers. However, a group of vultures gathered around the child to protect her from harm, ensuring that no carnivorous animals or Rakshasas took her life.

Kanwa, who had come to the forest to perform his ablutions, discovered the infant lying among the vultures. He took the child into his care and made her his daughter. He explained that since she was protected by the birds, the Sakuntas, he named her Sakuntala. She recounted this to Dushmanta, explaining that while she did not know her biological father, she regarded Kanwa as her father. Dushmanta, hearing this, was deeply impressed. He asked the beautiful princess to be his wife, promising her golden garlands, pearls, and the wealth of his kingdom, and proposed that they marry according to the Gandharva form.

Sakuntala told the king that her father was still away gathering fruit and that he should wait for Kanwa to bestow her upon him. Dushmanta argued that a person is their own friend and can depend on themselves. He explained the eight forms of marriage, noting that the first four are for Brahmanas and the first six for Kshatriyas, and that the Gandharva and Rakshasa forms are consistent with the practices of Kshatriyas. He told her he was full of desire and urged her, in a like mood, to accept him now. Sakuntala replied that if this course was sanctioned by religion, she would agree on one condition.

Sakuntala demanded that any son begotten between them must become the heir-apparent to the throne. Dushmanta agreed immediately without hesitation, promising to take her to his capital and telling her she deserved this. The two were wed according to the Gandharva form. After assuring her that he would send his troops to escort her to the city, Dushmanta departed. As he retraced his way home, he wondered what the illustrious ascetic would say once he learned of the union. He then entered his capital, leaving Sakuntala at the hermitage.

Shortly after, Kanwa returned. Sakuntala was filled with shame and did not go out to meet him, but the sage, possessing spiritual knowledge, saw everything. He told her that her union with Dushmanta was not destructive of her virtue, as the Gandharva form is the best for Kshatriyas. He prophesied that her son would be mighty and have sway over the sea. Sakuntala washed her father's feet and asked him to bless Dushmanta and his ministers. Kanwa agreed and offered her a boon. Sakuntala asked that the Paurava monarchs always remain virtuous and never be deprived of their thrones.
