The Ladder to Peace

Bhagavad Gita 12.12

Meaning · English

Knowledge is better than mechanical practice. Meditation is better than knowledge. Renouncing the fruits of action is better than meditation. From that renunciation, peace follows immediately.

Three words carry the verse. Abhyasa is practice done by rote, the repetition of a discipline without understanding. Jnana is knowledge, understanding what one is doing and why. Dhyana is meditation, the mind held steadily on one thing. Tyaga is renunciation, here of karma-phala, the fruit of action. Krishna lays them in rising order. Practice without understanding is the lowest. Understanding is better. Steady meditation is better still. Giving up the fruit of one's actions stands highest, and peace comes right after it, with no gap. The reason sits in the verses just before. Krishna has told Arjuna that if he cannot practise, he can act for Krishna's sake, and if he cannot even do that, he can give up the fruits of his actions. Here he shows that this last step is no consolation prize. Wanting a particular outcome is what keeps the mind restless, and when that grip is dropped the restlessness stops. He asks Arjuna to act fully and release the result. Shankara reads the ranking as praise meant to urge people toward renouncing fruits. Ramanuja reads the steps as stages within devotion, each leading to the next. Madhva takes the ranking as real, each step bringing the seeker nearer to knowing the Lord.

A man walks home from the market with a heavy sack on his shoulder. He can tell himself the sack is useful, or breathe evenly under it, but the real ease comes when he lets it down at the door. The sack is the wish for a result, and setting it down is the peace.

1. Choose one task today that you care about, such as an email, a repair or a cooked meal. 2. Before you begin, name the outcome you are hoping for, then tell yourself you will do the work fully and leave that outcome alone. 3. Work for twenty minutes without checking for a reply or a verdict. 4. When you stop, notice your shoulders, jaw and breath, and whether they feel looser than they usually do while waiting for a result.

A farmer has sown his field and wakes before dawn to look at the sky. Clouds are gathering, and he cannot tell whether rain will come or pass. He checks the sky, the phone forecast and his neighbour's face, again and again. The verse would change that morning in steps. First he sees which part is his: the seed, the water channel, the weeding. Then he does that work with full attention. Then he stops asking the sky for an answer it cannot give today. His hands stay busy, and his mind has less to circle. Ordinary experience confirms that a body kept braced for a verdict stays tense, and that a settled day's work tends to quiet it. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise rain, and it does not remove the fear of a failed crop or the debt behind it. It does not replace help from neighbours, lenders or a doctor if worry turns into sleeplessness that will not lift.
