A Heart Without Enmity
Bhagavad Gita 12.13
Meaning · English
One who bears no hatred toward any living being, who is friendly and compassionate, who claims nothing as mine and nothing as I, who stays level in pain and pleasure, and who forgives.
Krishna begins here to describe the devotee he loves, and he starts with how that person treats other people. Three words carry it. Maitri, friendliness, comes from mitra, a friend: an active goodwill, more than the absence of anger. Karuna, compassion, is the feeling that moves toward someone else's pain. Mama means mine, so nirmama is a person who does not mark things off as mine. Ahankara is the I-maker, the habit of building everything around me, so nirahankara is its loosening. The portrait runs in order. There is no malice toward any creature, and in its place friendliness and compassion. Possession and ego are dropped. Pain and pleasure are met evenly, and wrongs done to the person are forgiven. Krishna gives the reason by implication: hatred, grasping and self-importance all come from guarding a small self, and that guarding is what makes a person hard to live with and hard to steady. Shankara reads these as marks of the one who sees the Self in all beings. Ramanuja reads them as the character of the devotee who is dear to God. Madhva reads them as the fruit of knowing God's supremacy and resting in his grace. Krishna asks Arjuna to see what such a person looks like.
A clenched fist can neither give nor receive, and it tires quickly. An open hand rests easily and can hold something or let it go. Hatred, mine and I are the clenching. The qualities Krishna lists are the same hand, opened, still the person's own.
1. Tonight, pick one person who irritates you and name one thing they probably struggle with. Spend two minutes wishing them well in plain words, silently. 2. Tomorrow, when you catch yourself saying 'mine' about a seat, a remote or an opinion, pause for one breath before you defend it. 3. This week, forgive one small wrong, such as a late reply or a careless word, by deciding not to retell it to anyone.
A woman sits at a cousin's wedding lunch, and across the table is the relative who once kept money owed to her family. Her jaw is tight, and she is rehearsing what she will say if he speaks to her. The verse would change this in steps. First she notices the rehearsing and sees it is costing her the meal. Then she lets him be one more guest who is also nervous, tired and carrying his own troubles, so the hatred loosens. Then she stops treating the old claim as the centre of herself, and a plain nod becomes possible. Pleasure at the food and sting at his presence both arrive, and neither rules her. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind busy with a grudge feels more tense and sleeps worse, and that anger shrinks our attention. The verse does not promise that he will apologise, that the money will return, or that the hurt will vanish. It does not say she must stay near someone who is dangerous. Forgiveness here is a state of her own heart, and it does not replace seeking justice or safety where they are needed.
