Steady Contentment, Mind Offered

Bhagavad Gita 12.14

Meaning · English

Ever contented, a yogi self-controlled and firm in conviction, with mind and intellect dedicated to me: such a devotee of mine is very dear to me.

Krishna names five marks of the devotee he holds dear. Santushta means contented: needing nothing more than what has come. Satatam means steadily, so the contentment does not come and go with the day's news. Yogi here means one joined in devotion, whose life is held together by one relationship. Yata-atma, the self-controlled, is one whose mind and senses are reined in. Dridha-nishchaya, firm in conviction, is one whose resolve does not wobble when doubt arrives. Then comes the center of the verse: arpita, dedicated or laid down, applied to both manas, the mind that wanders and wants, and buddhi, the intellect that weighs and decides. Both are handed to Krishna, so thought and judgment alike are pointed at him. The reason sits in the surrounding talk of the person Krishna loves: someone who is not pulled apart by craving, so a settled mind can do the offering. Contentment is the fruit of that offering, not a mood to be forced. The verse asks the listener for a mind that is quiet, held in check, sure of its direction and given over. Shankara reads the yogi as one steady in meditation on the Lord. Ramanuja reads the whole verse as describing devotion itself, with the mind absorbed in God. Madhva stresses that the firm conviction is knowledge of God's greatness.

A boat tied to a pier rises and falls with every wave, yet it is not carried off, because the rope is fixed to something that does not move. The waves are the day's gains and losses. The rope is mind and intellect given to Krishna, and the steady boat is the contented devotee.

1. Choose one task today, such as washing dishes, walking to the shop or answering a message. Before starting, take three slow breaths and say inwardly, this is offered. 2. Do it with full attention for ten minutes, and when your mind drifts to wanting something else, bring it back to the task. 3. At night, spend one minute noticing a moment when you felt enough, even a small one, and where in your body you felt it.

A tailor sits at dusk with a wedding order due at dawn and a half-sewn blouse in her lap. Her hands tremble, the needle slips, and her mind runs to the angry customer and the money she may lose. The verse would change the evening step by step. First she notices the racing and lets her breath slow, which is the self-control the verse names. Then she asks one clear question, what is the next seam, and decides it, which is the intellect doing its single job. Then she hands the outcome over and goes on stitching, with the worry no longer driving her fingers. Ordinary experience bears this out: a rattled mind makes poorer stitches and poorer choices. The verse does not promise that the blouse will be finished, that the customer will be kind or that the money will come. It also does not replace rest, help from another pair of hands or a doctor if the dread does not lift.
