Calm Among People

Bhagavad Gita 12.15

Meaning · English

The one who agitates no one, and is not agitated by anyone, who is freed from pleasure, pain, fear and anxiety, is very dear to me.

Three words carry this. Udvega means agitation, a shaking up. It appears twice: once for what a person does to others, once for what others do to the person. Amarsha, which the glossary gives as pain, is read by the commentators as a sting of resentment or intolerance. Priya means dear, someone loved. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person he holds dear is one nobody has to brace against, and who does not have to brace against anyone. That same person is not thrown about inside by delight, hurt, dread or nervous worry. Krishna says this because the verses before it describe the devotee as friendly, forgiving, contented and equal in pleasure and distress. Here that steadiness is shown in company. Arjuna is about to be swept by fear and grief, and Krishna answers with a person whose peace does not cost others theirs. What it asks of the listener is to watch two things as one: the weather inside, and the weather one brings into a room. Shankara reads the freedom from resentment as freedom from intolerance of other people's good fortune. Ramanuja treats these as marks of a devotee whose devotion shows in conduct. Madhva ties such steadiness to knowing the supremacy of God.

An old banyan at the edge of a village square. Traders push past, children shout, a storm tosses its top branches, and still people sit in its shade without feeling crowded. The tree stands for the person Krishna describes: rooted enough that others find rest near them, and not shaken by what moves around them.

1. Pick one ordinary hour today, such as the evening commute or dinner with family, and decide to watch only two things: whether anyone around you tenses when you speak, and whether anyone's mood tugs yours. 2. When you notice a jolt of irritation, delight or worry, name it silently, for example 'fear' or 'pleasure', and take three slow breaths before replying. 3. Before bed, write one line on whether anyone seemed easier or harder to be near because of you.

A man stands on a packed platform at six in the evening. The train is forty minutes late and a stranger's bag knocks his arm. His jaw tightens, and he nearly snaps. Krishna's description changes the moment in small steps. First the jolt is noticed as a jolt: heat, a rush toward anger, a worry about getting home late. Because it is noticed, he does not have to hand it to the stranger. He answers evenly, or says nothing. The stranger leaves without carrying his mood off, and he leaves without carrying the stranger's. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: when we are tired and hurried, we snap more easily, so the steadiness the verse praises is easier to keep with food, rest and a little slack in the day. The verse does not promise the train will come, that the worry about being late will vanish, or that fear never rises. Persistent dread or anger that will not settle is a matter for a doctor, not for resolve alone.
