Meaning · English
Indifferent to worldly gain, pure, skillful, without cares, untroubled, giving up every undertaking: such a devotee of mine is very dear to me.
Krishna gives Arjuna a list of qualities, and three words in it repay a slow look. Anapeksha means not looking toward something, not leaning on an outcome. Udasina comes from a root for sitting apart or above, so it describes someone who does not take sides in his own affairs. Parityagi means one who gives up all around, completely. Arambha means a beginning, a project taken up. So the one dear to Krishna has no hunger for gain, is clean in motive and habit, and is skilled at what he does. Skill is on the list beside renunciation, and Krishna does not treat them as opposites. Such a person has no cares and no trouble, because he is not holding a result that could be taken from him. Krishna's reason is plain. Gain-seeking and trouble travel together, and both weaken devotion. Giving up all undertakings points to the grasping that starts a project for the sake of what it will bring. It does not point to idleness. The listener is asked to work well with open hands. Shankara reads the giving up as renouncing every action begun for a worldly result. Ramanuja reads it as dropping whatever undertakings work against devotion. Madhva reads it as dropping self-willed projects and acting as the Lord's servant.
A postman carries letters across town with care, on time, through rain and heavy bags. He never opens them or waits to learn the news inside. The work is fully his, and the contents are not. Skilled action without a claim on its fruit looks like this.
1. This morning, pick one ordinary task, such as a message, a meal or a repair. Before you start, name the result you hope for, then set it aside. 2. Work on it for twenty minutes. Each time the mind jumps to praise, payment or how it will look, note it and return to the next small step. 3. Finish by tidying the place where you worked. 4. Tonight, recall one thing you took on today from habit or vanity, not need. Leave it off tomorrow's list.
A tailor sits up the night before a wedding. The hem is unfinished, the family has phoned twice, and he is wondering whether the balance will be paid. His hands slow down each time he rehearses the bride's mother's face. Krishna's description of the dear devotee would change the evening in small steps. He would see that the worry about payment and opinion is not the stitching, and he would put it down and return to the seam. He would also refuse the extra order offered that afternoon, since it was never going to be finished well. Skill and calm would then sit in the same pair of hands. Ordinary experience agrees that attention split between the work and its reward makes the work worse. The teaching does not promise that the bride's family will be pleased, that he will be paid in full, or that his tiredness will lift. Worry may come back at midnight. What changes is where his hands and mind are while it does.
