The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 12 · The Devotee He Loves
Nectar Followed Faithfully
Bhagavad Gita 12.20
Meaning · English
Those devotees who, with faith, follow this deathless nectar of wisdom exactly as it has been declared, holding me as their highest goal, are exceedingly dear to me.
Three words carry the verse. Amrita means deathless, from a (not) and mrita (dead). It is the word for nectar, the drink that outlasts dying. Krishna calls his teaching by this name. Paryupasate comes from sitting close beside something and attending to it. It means staying with a teaching, not tasting it once. Shraddha is faith, literally a placing of the heart. Then come the plain clauses. The teaching is followed as it was declared, not trimmed to taste. Faith drives the following. And Krishna is held as the supreme goal, the thing everything else serves. Krishna tells Arjuna that people who live this way are exceedingly dear to him. The reason sits in the two verses before it. Krishna has just described a person even in friend and foe, content with whatever comes, firm in mind. Here he names how such a person is made: by steady, faithful keeping of the teaching, with him as the aim. Shankara reads the nectar as the whole body of qualities just described, which leads toward freedom. Ramanuja reads devotion itself as both the path and the goal. Madhva stresses that the devotion rests on knowing Krishna as supreme.
A woman cooks her late mother's dish from the handwritten card, measuring exactly what is written, though she could shortcut it, because she trusts the hand that wrote it and the meal is for that person. The card is the teaching as declared, the trust is faith, and the person she cooks for is the goal.
1. Tonight, copy one line from the two verses before this, such as being content with whatever comes, onto a slip of paper in its own words. 2. Tomorrow morning, read the slip slowly for two minutes. Do not reword it. 3. At the first irritation of the day, try to act as the line says, even clumsily. 4. In the evening, write one sentence: where did I follow it, and where did I soften it?
A retired bus driver sits on his bed at ten at night with three half-read spiritual books on the quilt. Each seemed right when he opened it. None has been finished. He wonders which one to trust and reaches for his phone instead. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, it asks him to choose one teaching and sit close beside it, not sample many. Second, it asks him to take it as declared, so he reads the page in front of him and does not swap in the page he likes better. Third, it asks for faith, meaning he begins before he is certain. Fourth, it names a goal that gives the reading a direction. Ordinary experience agrees that a habit repeated at the same hour in the same place holds better than one chased in scattered bursts. The verse does not promise he will feel anything that night, or that doubt will vanish. It also does not settle which book he should pick. It says only how Krishna regards those who keep faith with what they have chosen.
