The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 12 · The Devotee He Loves

Steady in Praise and Blame

Bhagavad Gita 12.19

Meaning · English

Alike to blame and praise, quiet in contemplation, content with whatever comes, without attachment to any dwelling, firm in mind and full of devotion: such a person is very dear to me.

Krishna goes on describing the devotee he holds dear, and the portrait now turns to how such a person meets the world. Tulya means alike, level, like a balance with equal weight on both pans. Nindā and stuti are blame and praise, and Krishna says this person weighs them the same. Maunī comes from muni, a silent one. It covers quiet speech and also a quiet, collected mind. Aniketa means without a niketa, a house: no dwelling is taken as the place where the self is anchored. Sthira-mati is a fixed intellect, a mind that does not drift. The plain sense is that praise does not lift this person and blame does not sink them. They speak little, take what comes and are content with it, hold no place as their own, and keep the mind steady. Krishna gives the reason in the last phrase: this person is full of devotion. The mind rests on him, not on what others say or what the day brings, so nothing outside has much to pull on. Arjuna is asked to see that steadiness comes from where the mind is anchored. Shankara reads maunī as one who restrains speech and thought. Ramanuja takes the silence as the mind dwelling constantly on God. Madhva reads all these marks as flowing from devotion grounded in knowing God's greatness.

A boat tied to a firm post at the bank still rises and falls with the water, but the knot holds and the boat goes nowhere. Praise and blame are the waves. Devotion is the post. The person is moved a little, yet not carried off.

1. Today, when someone praises you or criticises you, wait three breaths before you answer or react. Notice where in the body it lands. 2. Choose one meal or one small discomfort today, such as a cold room or a delayed bus, and accept it without complaint. 3. Spend five quiet minutes this evening without speaking, phone or screen. Simply rest the mind on what you hold most dear. 4. Before sleep, name one remark from today that moved you too much.

A woman who runs a tea stall at a bus stop hears a customer shout that her tea is cold. An hour earlier a regular told her it was the best on the road. Her face is hot, and she wants to argue or to sulk for the rest of the day. The verse changes the moment step by step. She notices the heat in her face and says nothing yet. She sees that the earlier praise and this complaint pull the same way, toward making her feel she is only as good as the last comment. She checks whether the tea was in fact cold, and if so pours a fresh cup without fuss. Then she returns to the work in front of her, settled in what she cares about more than in either remark. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind which needs every comment to go well is easily knocked off balance. The verse does not promise that the sting never comes, or that a harsh word stops hurting. It does not settle a real money worry or tiredness, and it does not replace rest, help or a doctor when one is needed.
