Level in Every Weather

Bhagavad Gita 12.18

Meaning · English

Equal toward enemy and friend, the same in honor and dishonor, in cold and heat, in joy and sorrow, balanced, and free from every unfavorable association.

Krishna lists four pairs: foe and friend, honor and dishonor, cold and heat, joy and sorrow. Each pair is the kind of thing that normally tips a person over. Two words hold the verse together. Sama means level, even, the same on both sides. Sanga means clinging, a binding attachment, the pull of company or circumstance that has hold of the mind. Vivarjita means set aside, given up. So the devotee Krishna calls dear is level because the hooks are out. He is not made of stone. He still meets a friend as a friend and a foe as a foe, but neither one decides his state of mind. The reason is the problem running through this chapter: a mind that clings is moved by every gain and loss, and a moved mind cannot rest on God. Cold and heat are the body's weather, honor and dishonor are other people's weather, and joy and sorrow are the mind's own. The verse asks for steadiness through all three. Shankara reads the freedom from sanga as the mark of one who knows the Self and no longer leans on outer things. Ramanuja reads it as turning away from every association except the one that leads to God. Madhva grounds the evenness in knowing God as the one who rules all that happens.

A stone doorstep lies across an entrance. Friends step on it, so do strangers and a man who dislikes the house. Rain falls on it, then sun. It stays where it is and holds everyone the same. The doorstep is the level mind, and the people and weather crossing it are the four pairs.

1. Pick one day this week and keep a small tally in your head of three swings: a remark that pleased or stung you, a bit of discomfort from weather or hunger, and a mood that rose or fell. 2. When one arrives, pause for about three breaths before answering it, and notice where the pull sits: chest, jaw, stomach. 3. Speak to the next person you dislike exactly as politely as you would to a friend, once, and notice what it costs. 4. At night, name the one pull that held you longest.

A woman arrives at her sister-in-law's housewarming and finds herself seated beside a former colleague who once took credit for her work. Her jaw tightens before a word is said. She is hot from the walk, tired, and the old sting is back. In the light of this verse, she would first notice the three weathers separately: the heat is the body's, the sting is memory, and the seat is only a seat. She would greet the colleague as she greets everyone, neither performing warmth nor withholding it, and let the praise or the cold remark pass through without taking hold. Ordinary experience agrees that a hungry, overheated person is quicker to take offense, so seeing the body's part first is useful. Krishna's teaching goes further than this: it asks for freedom from the clinging itself, and he gives it as the mark of a devotee. It does not promise that the old hurt vanishes, that she will feel nothing, or that she owes anyone her trust. It is also not a substitute for help when a relationship is truly harmful.
