That field: what it is, what its nature is, how it changes, and from what it arises. And he who knows it: who he is, and what his powers are. Hear all of this from me, in brief.
Krishna sets out a plan before he teaches. He names the questions he is about to answer, and asks Arjuna to listen. Three words carry the plan. Kshetra is a field, a patch of ground where things are sown and reaped. Krishna has already called the body by this name. Vikara is change, the way something shifts from one state to another. Prabhava is power, the strength a being has. Samasena means briefly, in summary. So the field comes first: what it is, what it is like, how it changes, and where it comes from. Then the one who knows the field: who he is and what he can do. Krishna promises to put it in short form, because the full account would take too long. He gives his reason elsewhere in the chapter: knowing field and knower together is, in his view, true knowledge. The verse asks only for attentive hearing. Shankara reads the knower as the one Self, distinct from the changing field. Ramanuja reads field and knower as matter and individual souls, both belonging to the Lord. Madhva stresses that the Lord, souls and matter stay distinct, and the knower's powers depend on the Lord.
A guide at a trailhead hands you a one-page map before the walk. It marks the ground, the steep parts, where the stream starts, and who will walk with you. Krishna's verse is that page: a short outline of the field and its knower, given before the long climb of the chapter begins.
1. Pick one evening this week and sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write two short lists. First, what in your body and mind changed today: hunger, mood, energy, a sore spot. 3. Second, write one line about whatever noticed those changes. 4. Read both lists once, slowly, and stop. Do not fix anything.
A grandmother on her seventieth birthday climbs the stairs to her bedroom and feels her knees ache. She remembers running up these same steps. Her first thought is that she is falling apart. The verse gives her a different frame. Krishna tells Arjuna that the body is a field, with a nature, a way of changing, and a source. And there is one who knows it. So she can name what is happening: this field is changing, as fields do. Then she can ask who is watching the change. That gives her a small steadiness. She can take the stairs slowly, hold the rail, and mention the knee to her doctor without shame or panic. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: it is easier to look after a body you can describe calmly than one you are afraid of. The limit is plain. Naming the field does not mend a knee, ease pain, or replace a doctor's advice. It also does not take away her sadness about growing older.
