Knower of All Fields

Bhagavad Gita 13.3

Meaning · English

Know Me as the knower of the field in every individual field, Arjun. The understanding of the field and of its knower, that, in My opinion, is true knowledge.

Three words carry this. Kshetra means a field, ground that is ploughed, sown and reaped. Krishna has just called the body that field. Kshetrajna means the knower of the field, built on jna, to know. It is the one who stands on the ground and is aware of it. Jnana is knowledge, and here it has a definite shape. Krishna tells Arjuna to know him as the knower in all fields, not in one. Each person knows only their own body from inside. Krishna says the knower is present in every field there is. Then he gives his own judgment of what counts as knowledge: understanding the field and its knower together, and seeing them as two. The reason is Arjuna's question in the previous verses, where he asked to know exactly these things. Krishna answers by placing himself in the picture, so the teaching is about what he is as well as about what Arjuna is. It asks Arjuna to stop treating the ground as the one who stands on it. Shankara reads the knower in all fields as one Self, with no real division between it and the Supreme. Ramanuja reads it as God dwelling within every self and body, distinct from them yet never apart. Madhva reads it as God abiding in all, with a lasting difference between God and souls.

A village headman keeps the register of every plot in the village. Each farmer knows his own field well, its stones and its wet corner. The headman knows all of them. Each person knows one body from inside, and Krishna says he is the knower in every one of those fields.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and feel one body part, a hand or a foot, as ground you are looking at. 2. Next time you feel tired, hungry or tense, say quietly, "The body is feeling this, and I am aware of it." 3. Once today, when you meet someone, remember that the one who knows their body from inside is also present in them. Notice whether your manner changes.

A grandmother is threading a needle for her granddaughter's torn sleeve, and her hand will not hold still. The first thought arrives fast: I am falling apart. Now set the verse beside that moment. Krishna tells Arjuna that the body is a field and that there is a knower of it. She sees the tremor as something happening in the field, and herself as the one watching it. That small step back lets her put the needle down, say what is happening, and ask the child to hold the thread, instead of hiding it or panicking. She can also note the tremor to tell her doctor later, which a calm watcher does better than a frightened one. Ordinary experience bears this out: naming a feeling or a sensation often loosens its grip. The limit is plain. The verse does not stop a tremor, cure what causes it, or take the place of a doctor, and it does not promise she will feel no worry.
