Bhagavad Gita 13.6
Meaning · English
The great elements, the ego, the intellect, and the unmanifested primordial matter; the eleven senses, and the five objects of the senses.
Krishna now begins to list what the field is made of. Three words carry the weight. Mahabhuta means the great elements, the coarse stuff the body and world are built from. Ahankara is ego, literally the 'I-maker', the faculty that says 'this is mine, this is me'. Avyakta is the unmanifested, the primordial matter that has not yet taken any shape. The list runs from the most visible to the finest source: the elements, then ego, then intellect, then the unmanifested. Alongside them stand the eleven senses, which are the five that perceive, the five that act, and the mind as the eleventh, and then the five objects those senses meet. Krishna answers Arjuna's earlier question, what is the field, by naming its parts one by one. The reason he gives it is that Arjuna cannot tell the field from its knower until he sees how much belongs to the field. Intellect and ego are on the list, so the sense of 'I' and the act of deciding are counted as part of what is known, not the one who knows. Shankara reads the list as the whole realm of what is observed, set apart from the Self. Ramanuja reads it as the body and its instruments, belonging to God as his own. Madhva reads it as real material that is dependent on God. The verse asks Arjuna to learn the inventory first.
Picture a cook emptying a cupboard onto the kitchen table and laying out every jar, tin and sack before the meal begins. Nothing is cooked yet. The verse does the same: it sets out all the stuff of body, mind and senses on the table, so the one standing at the table can be told apart from it.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write down what you noticed in the last hour: a sound, a taste, a thought, a flash of 'I want' or 'I am right'. 3. Next to each item, mark whether it came through a sense, the mind, or the sense of 'me'. 4. Read the list back and notice that you were there to read it. Keep the paper if you like.
A taxi driver sits in a jam, horn blaring around him, jaw tight. Heat from the engine, the noise, the thought 'they are making me late' and the sting of being wronged all arrive at once, and it feels like one single mood called 'me'. The verse would have him sort it. The heat and sound are sense objects. The ears and skin are the senses. The thought is the intellect at work, and the 'me' that was wronged is the ego. Named separately, they look less like him and more like things passing through the cab. Ordinary experience bears this out a little: a feeling named is easier to hold than one that is a fog. The old terms do not map neatly onto brain anatomy. Unmanifested matter and the five elements have no modern counterpart, and the verse offers no medical cure for anger or traffic. Krishna's list is a teaching about what the field contains, and it does not promise the jam will ease or the anger vanish. It gives him names for the parts.
