The Field Described
Bhagavad Gita 13.7
Meaning · English
Desire and aversion, happiness and misery, the aggregate, consciousness, and will: all these, together with their modifications, are said to make up the field of activities.
Krishna finishes his description of the kshetra, the field. The word means a plot of ground where something grows and is worked. Here it is the whole ground of a person's experience. He has already listed the elements, ego, intellect, senses and their objects. Now he adds the inner weather: ichchha is wanting, dvesha is pushing away, sukha is pleasure, duhkha is pain. Sanghata is the aggregate, the body and mind held together as one working whole. Chetana is the living awareness that runs through that whole, and dhriti is the will that holds it steady. Sa-vikara means each of these is always changing and being modified. None of it stays put. Krishna tells Arjuna the field is made of all this, and the list matters because it puts wanting, dislike, joy and sorrow among the things that grow on the plot. They are not the one who tends it. Krishna gives this description so that Arjuna can tell the field from the knower of the field, which is where the chapter is heading. Shankara reads the field as everything that can be known and so is distinct from the knower. Ramanuja reads it as the body and mind that the individual self uses and experiences through. Madhva reads it as changing matter that depends on God.
A kitchen garden through one season: weeds come up, rain flattens a row, tomatoes ripen, the heat dries a corner. All of it happens on the plot, and the gardener walks the edge and sees it. Wanting, dislike, joy and pain are like that growth: part of the ground, always shifting, and open to being looked at.
1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write down the day's strongest moments in four short columns: something you wanted, something you pushed away, something pleasant, something painful. 3. Beside each, write one word for how long it lasted and how it ended. 4. Read the page once, like a farmer walking a field, and notice how many of these have already changed.
A man stands on a railway platform after a sharp quarrel with his brother over their father's land. His jaw is tight. He wants to be proved right, he cannot stand the thought of the brother's face, and his chest hurts. The verse gives him a different way to look. Wanting to win, aversion to the brother, the sting in the chest and the hard resolve are named as parts of the field, things that arise in the body and mind and keep changing. He does not need to deny any of it. He can say, here is desire, here is aversion, here is pain, and watch the train arrive while they shift. Ordinary experience confirms that a feeling named plainly often loosens a little. The verse does not promise that the quarrel is settled, that the land question goes away, or that the hurt stops. A tight chest that does not ease, or one with pain spreading to the arm, still needs a doctor.
