Nine Marks of Knowing
Bhagavad Gita 13.8
Meaning · English
Humility, freedom from pretense, non-violence, forgiveness, simplicity, service of the teacher, purity of body and mind, steadiness, and mastery over oneself.
Krishna gives Arjuna a list of nine qualities. Three words repay a slow look. Amanitva is humbleness. Its root is mana, the hunger for honor and rank, so the word means being free of that hunger. Ahimsa is non-violence. Himsa is the wish to harm, and the a in front removes it, so the word covers the wish as well as the blow. Acharya-upasana is service of the teacher. Upasana means sitting near, so it describes a student who stays close, listens and helps. The other qualities follow the same plain lines. Adambhitva is not putting on a show of goodness. Kshanti is forgiving. Arjava is simplicity, a mind and speech that run straight. Shaucha is cleanness of body and of mind. Sthairya is staying steady and standing firm when pushed. Atma-vinigraha is holding oneself in check. Krishna has just described the field, which holds desire, aversion, pleasure and pain. These nine qualities come right after it. Read in that light, they are what calms a mind pulled around by those forces. The commentators weigh the list differently. Shankara takes these qualities as the groundwork that makes knowledge of the self possible. Ramanuja takes them as the character of one who seeks to see the self and serves God. Madhva takes them as qualities practiced with the knowledge of God as supreme. All three treat the list as a way of living and not as ornament. The verse asks the listener to become this kind of person.
Before a farmer sows, he clears the plot. He pulls out stones, uproots weeds and levels the ground. The seed is not the clearing, but it cannot take root without it. The nine qualities work like that clearing: they ready a person to receive what is taught.
1. Tonight, pick one quality from the list, such as forgiveness or simplicity, and write it on a slip of paper. 2. Carry it for one day. Each time you notice yourself boasting, hiding something, or holding a grudge, stop for one breath. 3. Once today, say something plainly, with no polish, even if it is slightly awkward. 4. At night, spend two minutes recalling where the quality came easily and where it did not. Do not judge it. Just note it.
A man stands at his younger brother's door. The brother borrowed money two years ago and never mentioned it again. The man has rehearsed a speech that would win the argument and leave the brother small. Krishna's list changes the moment step by step. Self-control lets the first heat pass before he speaks. Freedom from the need to be honored lets him drop the aim of winning. Simplicity lets him say the plain thing: the money matters to him, and so does the brother. Forgiveness lets him leave the door open while still asking for what is owed. Steadiness keeps him from collapsing if the brother gets angry. Ordinary experience agrees that anger and a bruised pride tend to speak first, and that a pause changes what comes out. The verse does not promise that the brother will repay, apologize, or even listen. It does not make the loss of money or trust hurt less. It describes the person the man can be at that door, whatever happens on the other side of it.
