Seeing Pain Plainly

Bhagavad Gita 13.9

Meaning · English

Dispassion toward the objects of the senses, absence of egotism, and also the perception of the evils and faults in birth, death, old age and disease.

Three words carry it. Vairagya is dispassion: raga is colour or pull, so vairagya is the pull gone out of things. Ahankara is the "I-maker", the habit of building a self from what I own, do and am praised for; anahankara is its absence. Anudarshana is looking along something again and again, which is more than a glance. Krishna tells Arjuna that knowledge includes these: the senses lose their grip on their objects, the swollen sense of "I" is gone, and the mind keeps seeing birth, death, old age, disease and pain for what they cost. The reason comes from the verses before it, where the field is the body, desire, aversion, pleasure and misery, all of it changing. Clinging to what must change ends in grief, and a steady look shows the cost before it is paid. The teaching asks for clear sight, not contempt for the world. Shankara reads the fault as something to be seen in each of the four, so that dispassion grows out of the seeing. Ramanuja reads the seeing as turning the mind from the body toward the self. Madhva takes it as one of the qualities that prepare a person to know the Lord. The word "also" binds the three together.

A traveller in a station waiting room knows the train will come. He uses the bench, drinks the tea, and chats with his neighbour, but he does not start rearranging the furniture as if he lived there. The waiting room is the body and its pleasures; his easy hold on them is dispassion.

1. Pick one thing you reach for out of habit, such as your phone or a snack, and delay it by five minutes today. 2. During those minutes, notice the pull itself: where in the body it sits and how it rises and fades. 3. Tonight, recall one moment when you wanted to be praised or proven right. Write one line on what it cost you. 4. When you next pass a hospital, a funeral or an elderly person, look for a few seconds without turning away.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while his father is in for a scan. The vending machine hums. He wants to scroll, to buy something sweet, to rehearse who failed to notice the symptoms sooner. The verse changes the moment in steps. First he lets the plain fact stand: his father is old, and the body can fail. Then he notices the reach for the phone and the snack as a pull and lets it pass unfed. Then the blaming voice, which is mostly "I" defending itself, loses its audience, and he can sit quietly and be useful when the doctor comes. Ordinary experience confirms that people who face a hard fact squarely often steady sooner than those who dodge it. The verse does not promise that the scan will be clear, that the fear will vanish, or that grief will be smaller. Nor does it replace the doctor's work.
