Holding Home Lightly
Bhagavad Gita 13.10
Meaning · English
Non-attachment and freedom from craving toward children, spouse, home and the rest; and a constant evenness of mind, whether the wanted or the unwanted comes.
Three terms carry the verse. Asakti is non-attachment: sakti is a sticking or clinging, and the a- in front takes it away. Anabhishvanga is the absence of craving, a clinging so deep that the other person's moods and fortunes become the ground you stand on. Sama-chittatva is even-mindedness: sama means level, chitta means mind. Krishna names the nearest things, children, spouse, home, because that is where clinging is strongest. He does not ask Arjuna to love them less. He asks that the holding not turn into dependence. The second half gives the test. Whether the wanted thing arrives or the unwanted one does, the mind stays level, and it does so constantly, not only on calm days. The reason lies in the list around it: Krishna presents these as marks of true knowledge. A mind pulled up and down by every gain and loss cannot see clearly. Shankara reads the whole list as knowledge itself, as the next verses call it. Ramanuja reads such qualities as the discipline that prepares the mind to see the self. Madhva reads them as the steadiness needed to know the Lord. All three take evenness as something to be practised.
A hand holds a small bird. Clenched, it crushes the bird. Flat and open, it keeps the bird warm and still lets it breathe. Love is the bird, and the grip is the clinging. The verse asks for the open hand.
1. Choose one person or place you are most attached to. Today, for five minutes, picture it going differently than you hoped, and notice where your body tightens. 2. Once today, when something wanted happens, pause for three breaths before reacting. Do the same when something unwanted happens. 3. Tonight, write one line: where did my mind swing furthest today? 4. Tomorrow, do one kind act for that same person without expecting thanks.
A woman is standing in her kitchen when two things reach her within the hour. Her son's job offer comes through, and her landlord's notice to vacate arrives. She feels herself leaping up and dropping down in the same afternoon. The verse would work in small steps. She notices that the joy and the alarm are both real, and that neither is the whole day. She lets the news sit before deciding anything about the flat. She keeps loving her son without needing his success to hold her up. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: decisions made at the peak of delight or the bottom of dread are usually the ones regretted later. The verse is a teaching about the mind, and it promises less than it may seem. It does not take away her worry about housing, and it does not stop her from feeling glad or afraid. It does not replace a lawyer, a doctor or a friend when those are needed. It describes a steadiness that lets her meet both pieces of news with a level head.
