Meaning · English
Steady devotion to me, joined to no other aim and never wavering; a liking for solitary places; and no relish for the crowd of ordinary society.
Krishna is still listing the marks of true knowledge, and here he turns to the heart. Take three words. Ananya means 'not another': the mind is joined to him and to nothing else as its final aim. Bhakti is devotion, a loving turning toward. Avyabhicharini means 'not straying', like a faithful partner, so the devotion keeps returning to him instead of wandering off. Next come two inclinations. Vivikta-desha is a solitary, set-apart place, and Krishna says the steady person likes being in one. Arati is the lack of rati, which is delight, so it means 'no relish' more than hatred. The crowd of ordinary society simply stops pulling at such a person. The reason lies in the verses around it: knowledge, for Krishna, is a way of living that keeps attention from being scattered, and a divided heart and constant company both scatter it. Solitude gives the mind room to gather. Krishna asks for a heart that has one centre and a taste for quiet. He does not ask Arjuna to dislike people. As the commentators read it, Shankara takes undivided devotion as the settled conviction that Vasudeva alone is the goal. Ramanuja reads it as unbroken loving meditation on Krishna, with solitude as its aid. Madhva grounds it in knowing the Lord's greatness, from which a steady love grows.
A houseplant on a windowsill leans toward the glass. Turn the pot and within days it bends back, without effort and without complaint. Devotion that has one direction works the same way: the heart keeps swinging back to Krishna, and rooms full of other pulls matter less because it already knows where its light is.
1. Pick one ten-minute stretch today, perhaps early morning or after dinner, and spend it in the quietest corner you can find, phone in another room. 2. Sit and bring to mind the one thing you most want to stay true to, whether that is God, a prayer, or a name. 3. When your mind wanders to tasks or chatter, notice where it went, then bring it back to that one thing. 4. Afterwards, notice how the noise of the next crowd or conversation feels to you.
A mother is at her cousin's wedding. The hall is loud, relatives keep pressing plates on her, and her phone buzzes with messages. She steps into the corridor and stands by a window for five minutes. Her shoulders drop, and she realises she has been holding her breath. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, it names the tiredness as ordinary: constant company and noise pull attention in many directions, and a mind pulled that way cannot settle on anything. Second, it gives the quiet place a purpose, which is to gather the mind around what she holds most dear instead of merely resting it. Third, it asks for one direction that she keeps returning to, so that she can walk back into the hall with her warmth intact and without resentment. Krishna's 'no relish' is a loosening of the pull, not a dislike of her relatives. The verse does not promise that crowds will stop tiring her, or that loneliness is harmless. Anyone whose withdrawal feels like heavy sadness rather than a chosen quiet should speak to a doctor.
