What Counts as Knowledge

Bhagavad Gita 13.12

अध्यात्मज्ञाननित्यत्वं तत्त्वज्ञानार्थदर्शनम्।एतज्ज्ञानमिति प्रोक्तमज्ञानं यदतोन्यथा

Meaning · English

Constancy in knowledge of the self, and keeping in view the purpose of knowing how things truly are: all this is declared to be knowledge. Whatever runs contrary to it is ignorance.

Krishna closes a list here. The qualities he has been naming he now calls jnana, knowing, and he gives the word a plain, practical sense. Two phrases carry it. Adhyatma-jnana is knowledge concerning the self, and nityatva is constancy, from nitya, always: not one flash of insight but a steady return to it. Tattva-jnana is knowing how things really are, tattva being their true nature, and darshana is seeing. The second phrase says the knower keeps in sight what such knowing is for. So knowledge has two marks: it is steady, and it knows its aim. Then Krishna draws the border. All this is knowledge, and whatever is contrary to it is ignorance. By that measure a person can hold a great many facts and still be ignorant, if the knowing is scattered and aimed at nothing. Krishna tells Arjuna what to measure by before he goes on to name what ought to be known. Shankara reads the aim as liberation, the end that knowing the truth serves. Ramanuja reads it as knowing the self as distinct from the body, with the vision of the Lord as the goal. Madhva reads it as seeing the Supreme, on whom the self depends.

A man digs a foot deep in twenty places across a dry field and finds no water. His neighbour digs one well, a little each morning, and reaches it. Knowledge that wanders from topic to topic stays dry. Knowledge that is steady and knows what it is digging for reaches water.

1. Tonight, write down one thing you have been reading or learning lately. 2. Under it, write one sentence on what it is for: what in your life it should change. 3. If you cannot write the sentence, leave that item alone for a week and see whether you miss it. 4. Choose one small thing you do want to understand about yourself, such as what makes you impatient. Give it five minutes at the same hour each day this week, and note what you see.

A father sits up at two in the morning with his phone, reading everything he can find about his daughter's diagnosis. He has learned a great deal, and his hands still shake. Krishna's measure would ask him two things. Is this knowing steady, or is it a scatter of fragments that feeds the fear? And what is it for? Once he asks that, the night changes. He puts the phone down and writes four questions for the doctor, the ones that bear on what he can do tomorrow. The rest he lets go until morning. The knowing now has an aim, and it stops sprawling. The verse does not promise that this settles his fear or alters the diagnosis, and it does not replace the doctor's answers. Ordinary experience does confirm that facts gathered with no purpose tend to leave a person more anxious, not less.
