Meaning · English
I shall now declare what ought to be known, for knowing it one reaches immortality. It is Brahman, without beginning, subordinate to me. It is called neither existent nor non-existent.
Krishna opens with a promise. Jneya means what is to be known, and pravakshyami means I shall now reveal. After listing the habits that make up knowing, he names its object. Amrita means deathless, literally not-dying, and he says that knowing this object is how one reaches it. Then he describes it. Anadi means without a beginning: it was never made, so nothing before it could have caused it. Brahman means the vast, the all-supporting reality. Mat-param means subordinate to me, or having me as its highest. The last clause says it is neither sat nor asat. Sat is what exists and can be pointed to. Asat is what does not. Krishna says ordinary words of being and non-being fail to fit it. Why say all this? Arjuna is about to fight over things that begin and end, and Krishna wants him to see what does neither. The text asks the listener to treat this as the thing worth knowing. The commentators differ. Shankara reads the last clause as saying Brahman is beyond what words can name. Ramanuja takes Brahman here as the individual self, beginningless and dependent on Krishna. Madhva takes it as the Lord himself, whom no ordinary word of being or non-being can capture.
A lamp lit in a dark room shows the chairs, the table and the walls. Each can be pointed at and named. The light that shows them cannot be pointed at in the same way, since it is not one more piece of furniture. The verse treats Brahman like that light: it is not an object among objects, so being and non-being do not fit it.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes near a lamp or a window and name five objects you can see. 2. Then notice what lets you see them at all, the light or your own awareness, and that you cannot point to it as you pointed to the objects. 3. Next time you catch yourself saying 'it is' or 'it is not' about something big, such as your worth or your future, pause for one breath and ask whether those words can hold it.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. His mind runs between two answers: he will live, or he will not. Every few minutes he rehearses one, then the other, and neither calms him. Krishna's words point somewhere else. Before he is asked to settle between yes and no, he is told there is something to be known that does not begin or end, and that cannot be filed under either. The man need not solve the surgery in his head. He can let the two answers stop pulling at him and sit with the plain fact of breathing in a plastic chair, which is already here whatever the verdict. This gives the waiting a floor to stand on. The limit is clear. The verse does not say the father will recover, it does not take away fear or grief, and it does not replace the surgeon or the nurses doing their work. Ordinary experience does show that a mind forced to pick between two outcomes tires faster than one that is allowed to rest on what is present.
