Hands and Eyes Everywhere
Bhagavad Gita 13.14
Meaning · English
Everywhere it has hands and feet, everywhere eyes, heads and faces, everywhere ears. That one exists in the universe by pervading everything.
Three words carry the verse. Sarvatah means from every side, in every direction. Avritya means covering over, wrapping around, filling. Tishthati means stands or remains, so the picture is of something that stays in place while it fills everything. Krishna is describing the thing he promised to reveal in the previous verse, the beginningless Brahman, which is hard to grasp because it is neither simply existent nor simply non-existent. A thing like that cannot be pointed at, so he points to its presence instead. Wherever a hand reaches, a foot steps, an eye sees or an ear listens, that presence is there. Every act of grasping, walking, seeing and hearing in the world happens inside it. Krishna gives this to Arjuna as something to be known, because knowing it is said to lead to immortality. The listener is asked to stop picturing the divine as one distant figure and to see it as the ground of all living activity. The commentators differ. Shankara reads the limbs and senses as belonging to individual beings, borrowed from the one Self, which has no limbs of its own. Ramanuja reads all beings as the body of the Lord, so their hands and eyes are his. Madhva holds that the Lord is present in all beings as their inner controller, while remaining distinct from them.
Picture one power line running into a house. Every bulb, fan and kettle works only because the same current reaches it. Each appliance seems separate, but none runs on its own. The current is the presence in every hand and eye, and the appliances are the many living beings.
1. At your next meal, spend one minute noticing how many hands brought it to you: the cook, the seller, the grower, the driver. 2. Today, when you pass one stranger, notice that they are looking, hearing and walking just as you are. 3. Before sleep, recall one moment when you were watched, helped or heard without knowing it.
A man stands on a crowded railway platform at dusk after a bad day. Hundreds of people are around him, and he feels completely alone. His attention has shrunk to his own worry, and everyone else looks like scenery. Now bring in what Krishna tells Arjuna: the same presence looks out through every pair of eyes on that platform and listens through every ear. Step by step, the man notices the woman steadying her child, the porter lifting a bag, the vendor calling out. Each is doing what he is doing, seeing and walking and carrying, and each is seen the same way. His worry stays his own, but it is no longer the only thing in the picture. Ordinary experience confirms that worry narrows the field of attention and that looking outward loosens it. The verse does not promise that the loneliness will leave, that the day's trouble will be solved, or that one platform will feel different tomorrow. It gives him a wider way to stand inside the same evening, and it is no replacement for a friend, a doctor or rest when those are needed.
