Light Beyond Darkness

Bhagavad Gita 13.18

Meaning · English

Of all lights, it is the light, and it is said to lie beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the thing to be known, and the goal that knowledge reaches. It dwells in the heart of every living being.

Three words carry the verse. Jyotis is light, the thing that lets anything be seen. Tamas is darkness, here the dimness of not knowing. Param means beyond: past the reach of that dimness, not merely brighter than it. Krishna tells Arjuna that the source of light in every luminary is itself beyond darkness. Then he says it is three things at once: jnana, knowledge; jneya, what is to be known; and jnana-gamya, where knowledge finally arrives. Knower, known and destination are not three separate things. Last, he says it dwells in the heart of everyone, hridi sarvasya. It is not kept for sages or for the well-read. The reason he gives it here is practical. Arjuna has just been told this reality is subtle, far and near, undivided. Now Krishna says where to turn: not outward to a distant place, but to the heart, where it already is. It asks the listener to stop treating knowing as something collected from outside. Shankara reads the heart as the inner witness, one Self in all. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord dwelling within each soul as its inner controller, still distinct from it.

A lamp in a dark room lights the chairs, the table and the faces, but no one asks what lights the lamp itself. Imagine a lamp that also shows you the way out of the room, and is already burning in your own chest. The lamp is the light behind all seeing; the room is not-knowing.

1. Tonight, when a room goes dark or you switch off the last light, stay still for one minute before sleep. 2. Notice that you still know you are there. Something is aware even with nothing to see. 3. Place a hand on your chest and rest your attention there for a few breaths, without trying to feel anything in particular. 4. Tomorrow, when you learn something small, notice who it was that knew.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for a surgeon to come out. She has read everything she can find on her phone and is more frightened for it. Every fact she gathers sits outside her, and none of it settles her. The verse would turn her attention, step by step. First, it says that what lets her know anything at all is already present in her. Second, it says it is in the heart of everyone in that corridor, the other waiting families and the nurse at the desk. Third, it says the knowing she is chasing and the place she hopes to reach are not far apart. She can put the phone down and let her breath settle, aware of simply being aware. Ordinary experience confirms that a body that is rested and a mind that is quiet take in hard news better than a flooded one. The verse does not promise the surgery will go well, and it does not take away fear or grief. It is not a substitute for the doctors who are doing the work.
