One Light, Many Bodies
Bhagavad Gita 13.17
Meaning · English
Undivided, yet seeming to stand divided among beings. That is what is to be known: the sustainer of all beings, who swallows them up and brings them forth again.
Three words carry the verse. Avibhakta means not divided: vi is apart, bhakta is portioned out, and the a in front cancels it. Vibhakta is the same word without the cancelling, and iva, apparently, sits beside it. Bhartri means one who bears and feeds, a sustainer. Krishna tells Arjuna that what is to be known is whole in every being, though it looks cut into pieces, one piece to each body. The word iva matters: the division is how it appears, not what it is. Then he names three works of this one reality. It sustains beings while they last, it draws them back in, and it sends them out. Nothing else stands behind these three jobs. The reason he gives is the aim of the whole chapter: to know what is to be known, a person has to stop taking the many bodies as many separate owners of life. This asks Arjuna to look again at the people across the field. Shankara reads the undivided one as Brahman, with the division only apparent, like space seen inside many pots. Ramanuja reads beings as real parts or modes of the Lord, who is one and sustains them. Madhva holds that the Lord is truly distinct from beings, present in all of them yet never merged with them.
Picture one moon on a still night and a dozen buckets of water set out in a yard. Each bucket holds a small moon, and each looks like its own. Only one moon hangs overhead. The buckets are the separate beings, the single moon is what the verse says is undivided.
1. Today, pick one ordinary meeting: a shop, a bus, a doorway. Spend about a minute looking at the person in front of you. 2. While you look, quietly tell yourself, "the same life that is in me is in them." Do not argue with the thought. Just say it once. 3. Notice whether your tone, your hurry or your judgment shifts even slightly. Make no effort to force a feeling. 4. In the evening, recall that moment for a minute and note what was different.
A man stands in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for news about his father. Beside him sits a stranger waiting for news about her own. They have not spoken. Both are watching the same door, and both are afraid. Krishna's teaching, as the text gives it, is that the life in each of them is not two lives but one that merely looks cut in two. Taken step by step, the man could notice that the stranger's fear is the same as his own, offer her a cup of water, and find his own dread has less room to grow in silence. He would not need to settle what the teaching says about the self first. Ordinary experience confirms only a small part of this: shared trouble does loosen the sense of being alone with it. The Gita's claim goes much further than that, into what the self and the Lord are, and that is its own teaching, to be read as such. The verse does not promise the father will recover. It does not take away grief or replace the doctors who are working behind that door.
