Thus the field, and knowledge, and what is to be known have been told in brief. My devotee, understanding this, comes to share my own nature.

Krishna closes a summary. In this chapter he has named three things: kshetra, the field, meaning the body and the ground on which experience grows; jnana, knowledge, meaning the steady seeing that clears away confusion; and jneya, the knowable, meaning the one reality that knowledge finally reaches. He says he has given them samasatah, in brief, so the reader is meant to hold the outline, not every detail. Then comes the one who benefits: the bhakta, a devotee, someone whose love and trust are turned toward Krishna. Such a person, having understood these three, reaches mad-bhava, Krishna's own state of being. The reason is a problem Arjuna carries: he mistakes the field for himself and acts from that mistake. Seeing the field as a field, knowledge as the clearing of that error, and the knowable as the goal, a person stops standing in the wrong place. The verse asks for understanding joined with devotion, not one without the other. Shankara reads mad-bhava as realizing one's identity with the Self that Krishna is. Ramanuja reads it as reaching a state like Krishna's, in nature and in closeness, while remaining his servant. Madhva reads it as attaining Krishna's presence while the soul stays distinct from him.

A traveler pins a small map to the wall before a long walk: roads, a river, and the town marked at the far end. The map is not the walk, but it shows where ground ends and destination begins. The three summarized items work like that: the field is the ground, knowledge is the reading of the map, the knowable is the town.

1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper. Write three short lines: what in your day belonged to the body and its surroundings, what you came to understand, and what you still want to know most. 2. Read the three lines slowly and notice which one feels thinnest. 3. Before sleep, offer that thin line quietly to whatever you trust, in a sentence of your own, and leave it there until morning.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is being examined. He keeps saying, to nobody, that he cannot bear this, that he is falling apart, that he is the fear in his chest. The verse speaks to that hour. It gives a short outline: there is a field, which includes the body that is shaking and the place it sits in. There is knowledge, the plain seeing of that. And there is the knowable, which the text names as the goal. Step by step, he might notice the tight chest and the racing thoughts as things happening in the field. He might say to himself what is true: my father is ill, my body is afraid. Then, for Krishna's devotee, he turns toward the one he trusts, without needing to finish the whole teaching first. Ordinary experience confirms that naming a feeling plainly often loosens its grip a little. The verse does not promise that the father recovers, that fear leaves, or that grief is spared. It is also no substitute for the doctors, whose work goes on in that corridor.
