Three Roads, One Sight
Bhagavad Gita 13.25
Meaning · English
Some, through meditation, perceive the Supreme Soul within their own heart, seeing it by the mind. Others come to it through the cultivation of knowledge, and still others through the path of action, which joins the soul with God.
Krishna names three roads to one sight. Take the key words one at a time. Dhyana is meditation: the mind held on one thing until it settles. Sankhya is knowledge gained by sorting what is the self from what is only the field of body and nature, the subject of this whole chapter. Karma-yoga has two parts: karma is action, yoga is union, so it is action done as an offering and not for its fruit. What is seen is the Supreme Soul, the place of seeing is the heart, and the mind is the instrument. Some take one road and some another because people differ. Krishna does not rank them here, and he leaves no one out. The reason sits in the verses just before: the Supreme dwells in the body as witness and supporter, and seeing that frees a person from rebirth. Since the goal is the same, the way can fit the walker. Arjuna, standing in the middle of a war, is shown that he need not borrow someone else's road. Shankara reads the three as paths for different temperaments, with action purifying the mind so that knowledge can arise. Ramanuja takes them as parts of one discipline aimed at seeing the self, not as rival routes. Madhva stresses that what is seen is the Supreme Lord, and that the seeing rests on his grace.
Three paths climb the same hill to a lake. One is a flat, quiet track through pines. One is a steep stair with signposts. One is a working trail where walkers carry supplies up to the hut. Each walker reaches the same water. The paths are meditation, knowledge and action; the lake is the Supreme Soul seen in the heart.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet spot with your eyes closed, and notice how long your mind stays steady. 2. Tomorrow, read one page that answers a question you carry, and notice whether understanding settles you. 3. This week, do one ordinary chore for the household, such as washing the dishes, without wanting thanks, and notice how you feel afterward. 4. Note which of the three left you calmest. Keep returning to that one.
Three sisters sit in their late father's kitchen at five in the morning, after the funeral. One sits silently by the window with her tea. One keeps asking the doctor's letter questions, wanting to understand exactly what happened. The third is already washing cups and sorting the visitors' shoes. Each thinks the others are coping badly. The verse would change the morning in small steps. First, it lets each sister stop judging the other two, since Krishna names three honest ways of turning toward what is deepest, and none is a failure of the others. Second, each can see which way is her own and lean on it without apology. Third, they can lend each other what they have: stillness, answers and help. Ordinary experience agrees that people differ in what steadies them. The verse does not take away the grief, and it does not replace a doctor or a counsellor when sorrow grows too heavy to carry alone.
