The story · English

Parasara told Maitreya what he had heard from Marichi, about how Sri, the goddess of Auspiciousness, once left the three worlds. It began with Durvasa, an emanation of Sankara, who wandered the earth as an ascetic, wild in manner. One day he saw a Vidyadhari holding a celestial garland. Its perfume had made a whole forest of Santanaka trees seem more lovely to everyone who walked there. Durvasa asked her for it. The wife of the Vidyadhara bowed to him with respect and gave it over. He set the garland on his own head and went on roaming the earth, like a man out of his senses.

Then he saw Indra, lord of Sachi and ruler of the three worlds, riding his intoxicated elephant Airavata, with the gods around him. Durvasa took the garland from his head. Black bees were swarming around it, drunk on its scent. He threw it to Indra. Indra caught it and set it on Airavata's head, where it shone like the Jahnavi falling from the peak of Kailasa. But the elephant's eyes were blind with rut. The smell overwhelmed him, he drew it up with his trunk, and he flung the garland to the ground.

Durvasa's anger rose. He called Indra drunk on wealth, wicked of soul, puffed up with pride. He said: you did not bow, you did not say a word of thanks, you did not put it on your head with joy. You treat me like any other brahmin. Your prosperity will leave you, and the three worlds will lose Auspiciousness, for even the moving and the unmoving fear me when I am angry. Indra leapt down from his elephant and begged him to relent. Durvasa answered that he was not tender, and there was no forgiveness in him. Others might be gentle. He was Durvasa. Then he walked away.

Indra mounted Airavata and returned to Amaravati. From that day the three worlds lost their Auspiciousness. Sacrifices weakened and the herbs grew thin. People stopped offering rites, stopped their austerities, and took no joy in charity. Without strength they fell under the rule of their senses and could not hold their hearts steady even in small things. For where Prosperity is, strength follows, and without strength there is no virtue and no power. Seeing this, the Daityas and Danavas, themselves empty of Auspiciousness and strength, driven by greed, made war on the gods.

The gods were beaten. Indra and the others, with Agni at their head, went to Brahma, the Great-father, and told him everything. Brahma told them to take refuge in Vishnu, the supreme among gods, the destroyer of Asuras, the cause of all, who creates, protects and destroys, who takes away the misery of the humble and cannot be defeated. He said Vishnu would provide for their welfare. Then Brahma went with the assembled gods to the northern shore of the Milky Ocean.
