The gods had been told what to do, and the plan began with a hard thing: make peace with the Daityas, their old enemies. "Bring them into this work," the god of gods said. "Tell them they will share the fruit of it. When the sea is churned, the nectar will rise, and all of you who drink it will gain strength and never die. And I will arrange it so that your enemies do not get the ambrosia. They will have only the trouble." So the celestials made peace with the Asuras and set out to churn the ocean of milk for ambrosia. Parasara tells Maitreya how it went. They gathered many kinds of healing herbs and threw them into the pale water, which was white as autumn clouds.

Then they chose their tools. Mandara, the mountain, would be the churning-stick. Vasuki, the king of serpents, would be the rope. Krishna told the gods to hold the serpent at his tail, and the Daityas took the front of his body, the end with the head. The fire of Vasuki's breath poured out of his hood and scorched them, and they grew weak. From his mouth the breath also scattered clouds, and rain fell along the tail, and the gods were refreshed. Under the mountain, in the middle of the Milky sea, Hari took the shape of a tortoise and became the support on which the churning-stick turned.

Hari did more than that, and no one saw all of it. In one form he stood among the immortals, and in another among the Daityas, and he pulled on the serpent with both. In a third form, huge, he pulled the mountain upwards, and neither gods nor Asuras ever saw that form. Kesava gave the serpent king his strength, and the immortals he filled with another strength. So the sea was churned, and the first thing to rise was Surabhi, the cow who is worshipped by the gods, the home of clarified butter. Gods and Danavas both felt great delight, and they stared at her, their minds drawn entirely to her.

While the Siddhas were still wondering to themselves, "What is this?", Varuni came out, her eyes rolling with intoxication. Next, from a whirlpool in the Milky sea, rose Parijata, a tree that filled the whole universe with its scent, the tree in which the celestial women take delight. After that came a crowd of Apsaras, wonderfully lovely, graceful and noble in bearing. Then the Mild-rayed one, the moon, came up, and Maheswara took him for his own. The churning went on, turning up whatever the sea held, and not all of it was gentle.

Then the poison came out of the sea, and it was the serpents who claimed it and took it for themselves. The churning continued, and then the divine Dhanwantari arose, dressed in white. In his hands he carried a Kamandalu, a water pot, and it was full of nectar. This was what they had been working for, through all the pulling, the scorching breath and the strange things that rose before it. The ocean of milk had given up the ambrosia, and Dhanwantari stood there holding it.
