The Daityas' sons and the Danavas were delighted, and so were the ascetics. Out of the water rose the exalted Sri, full of grace. She sat on an open lotus and carried another lotus in her hand. The great sages, glad at the sight, praised her with the Sri Sukta. The Gandharvas, led by Viswavasu, began to sing before her. Apsaras such as Ghritachi danced, and rivers like Ganga came with water to bathe her. An elephant of one of the directions took water from golden vessels and poured it over the goddess, the Mistress of all the worlds.
The Milky-sea itself took on a form and gave her a wreath of lotuses that never fade. Viswakarma dressed her in ornaments. Then, wearing divine garlands and clothes, bathed and adorned, she went in the sight of all the gods and took her place on the chest of Hari. Her glance fell on the gods, and they were suddenly filled with joy. But she passed over the Daityas, headed by Viprachitti, who had always disregarded Vishnu, and did not look on them. So they were wrought up with extreme anxiety. Mighty in prowess, they seized the Kamandalu in Dhanwantari's hand, the vessel that held the ambrosia.
Vishnu took a female form, and the Daityas desired her. He secured the ambrosia and handed it over to the gods. Sakra and the other immortals drank it. The Daityas then rushed at them with raised weapons and swords. But the gods, strengthened by the ambrosia, beat the Daitya hosts. The Daityas fled in every direction and went down into the nether regions. The gods bowed to the bearer of the conch, discus and mace, as they had before, and went back to governing the heavens. The Sun returned to his own path, and the stars turned again in their orbits.
Fire began to burn brightly once more, crowned with splendour. All creatures felt a regard for righteousness. The three worlds were given grace again, and Sakra, chief of the gods, grew graceful as before. Sitting on his throne, with the heavens back in his hands and his rule restored, he began to praise the goddess who holds a lotus. Indra said: "I bow to the lotus-born mother of all beings, to Sri with lotus eyes, who rests on Vishnu's chest. You are Siddhi, you are nectar, you are Swaha and Swadha. You are twilight, light and lustre, wealth, intelligence, and Saraswati. You are the knowledge of Brahma, and you give the fruit of liberation. This universe is full of your gentle and your terrible forms."
Indra went on: "Who but you could live in the god of gods, the bearer of the mace, whom yogis contemplate? When you left, the three worlds came near to destruction, and through you they stand again. Wives, sons, houses, friends, grain and wealth come to people by your kind look. Health, riches, victory over enemies and happiness are easy for those you glance at. You are mother of all creatures, as Hari is father. If you leave, our wealth, cattle, houses and bodies are not safe. The one you forsake is forsaken by truth and goodness. Even a person without merit gains honour when you look on him. But no tongue can name all your perfections. Be gracious, lotus-eyed one. Never leave me."
Pleased, Sri spoke in the hearing of all the gods: "Ask for a boon. I have come to give it." Indra said: "Let it be this: that you will never abandon the three worlds. And let it be that you will never abandon the one who praises you with this hymn." Sri answered: "I will not leave the three worlds. And I will never be displeased with anyone who chants this hymn." Parasara then told how Sri was born of Bhrigu and Khyati, and again from the ocean. In each of Vishnu's descents she came too: as a lotus, as the Earth, as Sita, as Rukhmini. Where this hymn is chanted, Alakshmi cannot live, and poverty does not enter.
