The Lord Who Is Freedom
Rudrashtakam 1
Meaning · English
I bow to the Lord whose form is freedom, all-pervading, the vast reality the Vedas voice; beyond qualities and division, wanting nothing, a sky of awareness. I worship him.
Tulsidas opens by bowing, then names who he is bowing to. This Lord's form is freedom itself, not a body that later gets set free. He is spread through everything, the vast reality whose very form is the Veda. He is wholly his own. Then come three withouts. He has no qualities that could be listed, no inner split into this and that, and no wanting, because nothing is missing for him. Last, he is awareness itself, open and boundless. The line ends where it began, in worship.
Picture an empty room with the window open. The air inside and the air outside are one air; the walls hold it but do not cut it. Smoke drifts in and out, and the air is the same afterward. Awareness like the sky works this way: things pass through it, and it stays open, unmarked, everywhere.
