Formless, Fearsome, and Kind

Meaning · English
I bow to the formless root of Om, the fourth state, past speech, knowing and senses; mountain lord, fearsome, death of great Time, kind, home of virtues, beyond the world.
He has no shape, yet the sound Om grows out of him. He is the fourth state, the one behind waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Words cannot describe him, the mind cannot grasp him, the senses cannot touch him. Still he has a home: he is lord of the mountain. Time ends everything, and he ends even Time, which makes him terrible. In the same line he is called merciful, a storehouse of good qualities, and the far shore of the world's endless round.
A grandmother snatches a toddler's hand back from a hot stove, hard and fast, and the child cries at how fierce she looked. Ten minutes later the same hand is holding his on her lap. The fierceness and the care were one movement. That is why the verse can call him fearsome and merciful in a single breath.
