Meaning · English
White as snowy mountains, deep and grave, his body brighter than millions of love-gods; Ganga ripples on his head, a young moon lights his brow, serpents ring his throat.
His skin is white, the white of the snow peaks he lives among. He is called deep: quiet, steady, hard to sound to the bottom. His body shines brighter than ten million Kamas, the god of love, whose name here means mind-born and who stands for beauty itself. Then the eye travels downward from the crown. The Ganga sparkles and ripples on his head. A young crescent moon gleams on his forehead. Snakes lie coiled at his throat.
Picture hearing about someone for years, how steady they are, how generous, and then being handed a photograph. Nothing you heard is cancelled. Now you also know the face. Verses 1 and 2 told what he is; now the hymn hands over the photograph, from the white skin down to the snakes at his neck.
