Meaning · English

Earrings swaying, fine brows, wide lovely eyes, a glad face, blue-throated and compassionate, clothed in a lion's skin, garlanded with skulls: I worship Shankara, the beloved lord of all.

The hymn moves in close now, to his face. His earrings sway as he moves. His brows are fine and his eyes are wide. His face is pleased and at ease. His throat is blue, the mark he is known by, and he is merciful. Then his clothing: a lion's skin and a garland of skulls. The poet sets these right beside the word 'beloved' and does not explain them away. Shankara means the one who does good, and he is lord of all. The poet ends simply: I worship him.

A child runs to a grandfather just in from the field. His boots are muddy, his coat is torn, his hands are rough as bark. The child notices none of it. It sees the smile and climbs straight into his lap. The lion skin and skulls are the muddy boots. The glad face is what the poet runs toward.
