Trident Against Threefold Pain
Rudrashtakam 5
Meaning · English
Fierce, exalted, bold, highest Lord, undivided, unborn, bright as ten million suns; trident in hand, he uproots the three kinds of pain. I worship Bhavani's husband, reached through love.
The first words stack up his strength: fierce, highest, bold, ruler over all others. Then come words for what he is not: not broken into parts, never born. His light is put at ten million suns. The weapon in his hand is a trident, and the work it does is to end three kinds of pain for good. The last line turns personal. The singer worships him as Bhavani's husband, and says he is reached through heartfelt feeling.
A gardener pulls a weed and snaps the stem; in a week it is back. With a fork slid under the roots, it lifts out whole and stays gone. The trident is pictured that way: not trimming pain at the surface but lifting it out from underneath, so it does not grow back.
