Meaning · English

Beyond time, all good, ender of ages, joy of good people, foe of the three cities; pure awareness and joy, remover of delusion. Be gracious, Lord, slayer of desire.

Shiva stands outside the reach of time, yet he is the one who closes each age when it is done. He is goodness itself and keeps giving joy to good people. He is called the enemy of the three cities, and the enemy of Kama, the god of desire. He is made of awareness and joy, and he lifts away delusion, the fog that makes us mistake things. Then the poet stops describing and simply asks, twice over: be gracious, be pleased.

A referee on a football pitch is not part of either team. He never scores, and the result means nothing to him. Yet when he blows the final whistle, the match ends. Shiva stands to time the same way: outside its running, and still the one who calls each age to a close.
