Until the Lotus Feet

Rudrashtakam 7

Meaning · English

Until people, here or beyond, worship the lotus feet of Uma's husband, they find no happiness, no peace, no end to burning. Be pleased, master dwelling in every being.

The line is built as a plain condition: as long as people do not worship the feet of Uma's husband, Shiva, three things stay out of reach. Happiness. Calm. And an end to burning; the word for suffering is literally a scorching heat. The condition holds in this world and in whatever comes after. Then the poet turns from the rule to a request: be pleased, master. He names Shiva as the one living inside every being, so the one he asks is not far off.

Picture a house with good bulbs in every room and the main switch at the fuse box left off. Change bulbs, clean shades, flick every wall switch, and the rooms stay dark. The verse puts Shiva's feet where that main switch is: until that connection is made, happiness and calm do not come on.
