Nothing to Offer but a Bow

Rudrashtakam 8

न जानामि योगं जपं नैव पूजां नतोहं सदा सर्वदा शंभु तुभ्यं । जरा जन्म दुःखौघ तातप्यमानं प्रभो पाहि आपन्नमामीश शंभो

Meaning · English

I know no yoga, no chanting, no worship. Still I bow to you always, Shambhu. Burning in a flood of birth, age and sorrow, I turn to you: protect me.

The speaker admits to having none of the usual tools. No training in meditation. No habit of repeating a holy name. No skill at the rituals of worship. What remains is a bow, made always and everywhere. Then comes the reason for asking: life feels like being scorched again and again, by being born, by growing old, by one grief after another. So the prayer is short and plain. I have come to you for shelter; protect me.

A small child at a crowded dinner table can't read the menu, can't pay and can't cook. She simply lifts both arms toward her parent and waits to be picked up. Nobody thinks she has asked the wrong way. The raised arms are the whole request, just as the bow stands in for every practice the speaker lacks.

मैं न योग जानता हूँ, न जप, न पूजा, फिर भी शंभु, मैं सदा तुम्हें प्रणाम करता हूँ, और जन्म, बुढ़ापे और दुख की बाढ़ में जलता हुआ तुम्हारी ओर मुड़ता हूँ: मेरी रक्षा करो।

कहने वाला मान लेता है कि उसके पास सामान्य साधनों में से कोई भी नहीं है। ध्यान की कोई शिक्षा नहीं। पवित्र नाम दोहराने का कोई अभ्यास नहीं। पूजा की विधियों में कोई कुशलता नहीं। जो बचता है, वह है एक प्रणाम, जो सदा और हर जगह किया जाता है। फिर आता है माँगने का कारण: जीवन ऐसा लगता है मानो बार-बार झुलसना हो, जन्म लेने से, बूढ़े होने से, एक के बाद एक दुख से। इसलिए प्रार्थना छोटी और सीधी है। मैं तुम्हारी शरण में आया हूँ; मेरी रक्षा करो।

भीड़ भरी खाने की मेज़ पर बैठी एक छोटी बच्ची न खाने की सूची पढ़ सकती है, न पैसे चुका सकती है, न खाना बना सकती है। वह बस अपनी दोनों बाँहें माँ या पिता की ओर उठाती है और गोद में लिए जाने की प्रतीक्षा करती है। कोई नहीं सोचता कि उसने गलत ढंग से माँगा है। उठी हुई बाँहें ही पूरी विनती हैं, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे प्रणाम उन सब साधनों की जगह खड़ा है जो कहने वाले के पास नहीं हैं।
