The Hymn's Own Promise
Rudrashtakam 9
Meaning · English
This eight-verse hymn to Rudra was spoken by a brahmin to please Hara. Those who recite it with devotion, Shambhu is pleased with them.
The hymn closes by naming itself. Eight verses, called the Rudrashtakam, were spoken by a brahmin, a priest-scholar, for one purpose: to please Hara, a name of Shiva. Then comes the single promise. People who read or recite it with devotion, meaning with love and not by rote, find Shambhu pleased with them. Shambhu is Shiva again, the name meaning the one who brings ease. Nothing else is promised. The fruit is his favor, and the condition is the heart behind the reading.
Someone writes a birthday song for a friend. Others sing it to that friend later, off-key but with affection, and the friend's face lights up. The tune was made to please one person, and it still does whenever it is sung with warmth. This hymn was written to please Shiva, and any devoted voice still does that.
