Questions About the Body

Rig Veda 10.90.11

Meaning · English

When they divided the Person, into how many parts did they shape him? What was his mouth? What were his two arms? What are his thighs and feet called?

These lines are questions. Purusha is the cosmic person, the single body the gods laid out as an offering so that the world could be made from it. 'They' are those gods. Sāyaṇa takes them as the life-breaths of the creator, shaping by intention rather than by hand. The first question is broad: into how many parts was he divided? Then it narrows to his body piece by piece: mouth, arms, thighs, feet. The answer is held back for the next verse.

A carpenter stands over a whole log with a stick of chalk. Before any saw touches it, he marks the lines and decides which length becomes a beam, which a post, which the floor. The questions about the cosmic person work the same way: the whole body is there first, and the asking traces where each part will fall.
