Herds From the Offering
Rig Veda 10.90.10
Meaning · English
From that offering horses were born, and every animal with teeth in both jaws. Cattle were born from it; from it came goats and sheep.
The 'it' is the great offering just described: the cosmic person, given up whole. Out of that one body come the animals a herding people lived with. Horses come first. Then every creature with teeth in both the upper and lower jaws; Sāyaṇa names donkeys and mules among them. Cattle are listed on their own, since a cow has no upper front teeth. Last come goats and sheep. The herd is not made beside the offering. It is made out of it.
A baker takes a single lump of dough and pulls it apart: a long loaf, a round bun, a braid, small rolls. On the cooling rack they look like different things, yet every piece was once one mass. The horse, the cow, the goat and the sheep stand in the field the same way, shaped from one offered body.
