तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुत ऋचः सामानि जज्ञिरे। छन्दांसि जज्ञिरे तस्माद्यजुस्तस्मादजायत

From that sacrifice where everything was offered, the verses and the chants were born. The meters were born from it; from it the formulas came to be.
The sacrifice is the one where Purusha, the cosmic person, was offered whole, with nothing kept back. Sacred speech itself came from it. The verses are the hymns of praise gathered in the Rig Veda. The chants are those verses set to melody. The formulas are the short spoken lines of the rite. The meters are the measured shapes all of it takes. Sāyaṇa reads them as named meters like the Gayatri, while others take them as the Atharva Veda. The Veda itself comes out of the offering.
A baker keeps back a lump of today's dough to start tomorrow's bread. Every later loaf rises with something carried over from that first batch. The hymns, chants and formulas work the same way. Priests use them at every sacrifice, yet they were made in the first one, so each later rite carries a portion of the original offering.

उस यज्ञ से, जिसमें सब कुछ अर्पित किया गया, ऋचाएँ और साम उत्पन्न हुए। उसी से छंद उत्पन्न हुए; उसी से यजुष प्रकट हुए।
यह वही यज्ञ है जिसमें पुरुष, अर्थात विराट पुरुष, को बिना कुछ बचाए पूरा का पूरा अर्पित किया गया। पवित्र वाणी भी उसी से निकली। ऋचाएँ ऋग्वेद में संकलित स्तुति के मंत्र हैं। साम वही ऋचाएँ हैं जिन्हें स्वर में बाँधा गया है। यजुष अनुष्ठान में बोली जाने वाली छोटी पंक्तियाँ हैं। छंद वे नपे-तुले रूप हैं जिनमें यह सब ढलता है। सायण इन्हें गायत्री जैसे नामित छंद मानते हैं, जबकि अन्य इन्हें अथर्ववेद समझते हैं। स्वयं वेद आहुति से ही प्रकट होता है।
रोटी पकाने वाला आज के गूँधे आटे का एक लोंदा कल की रोटी का खमीर उठाने के लिए बचा रखता है। हर अगली रोटी उस पहली खेप से आगे लाए गए अंश के सहारे ही फूलती है। ऋचाएँ, साम और यजुष भी इसी तरह काम करते हैं। पुरोहित हर यज्ञ में इनका प्रयोग करते हैं, फिर भी ये पहले यज्ञ में रचे गए थे, इसलिए हर बाद का अनुष्ठान मूल आहुति का एक अंश अपने साथ लिए चलता है।
