Meaning · English
From that sacrifice in which everything was offered, the speckled butter was gathered. He made the animals of the wind, those of the forest and those of the village.
The sacrifice is the one described just before: the gods offering the Purusha himself, holding nothing back. From it came the first good things to eat. The speckled butter is ghee with curds stirred through it, so white flecks show. Sāyaṇa takes it to stand for all food that sustains life. Then come the animals: wild ones such as deer, tame ones such as cows and horses. Sāyaṇa reads 'of the wind' as animals belonging to Vayu, god of wind and the open sky; others read it as birds.
A family cooks a whole pumpkin. The flesh becomes soup, the seeds are roasted, and even the rind feeds the garden. Nothing is thrown out, and one thing ends up as many. The Purusha is given whole in the same way, and from that single body come both food and the animals of forest and village.
