Sprinkled on the Sacred Grass
Rig Veda 10.90.7
Meaning · English
On the strewn grass they sprinkled him as the sacrifice, the Person born at the very beginning. With him the gods worshipped, and the Sadhyas, and the seers.
The gods lay the first-born Person on the sacred grass and sprinkle him with water, the way a victim is made ready before an offering. He was born before anything else existed, so there was nothing to offer but him. With him the gods carry out the rite. The Sadhyas, an old class of divine beings, join them, and so do the seers who first heard the hymns. Sāyaṇa reads the whole rite as one performed in the mind, not on an altar.
Early in the morning a baker dusts the board with flour and lays down one great lump of dough that will become every loaf of the day. Nothing is baked yet. The dough is only set out and made ready. The sprinkling on the grass is that moment: one first body, prepared before the world is made from it.
