The Seasons as Offering
Rig Veda 10.90.6
यत्पुरुषेण हविषा देवा यज्ञमतन्वत। वसन्तो अस्यासीदाज्यं ग्रीष्म इध्मः शरद्धविः
Meaning · English
When the gods spread out the sacrifice with the Purusha as the offering, spring was its clarified butter, summer its firewood, and autumn the offering itself.
The gods hold a sacrifice, and what they offer is the Purusha, the cosmic person. Then each season takes a part. Spring is the clarified butter poured in to make the flame leap. Summer is the firewood that keeps it burning. Autumn is the offering laid in the fire, which Sāyaṇa takes to be the grain cakes of the rite. Sāyaṇa adds that nothing outside yet existed to offer, so the gods performed this sacrifice in the mind. They first named the Purusha the offering, then gave each season its role.
Think of a wall calendar in a farmhouse kitchen. Spring's page is marked for sowing, summer's for cutting wood, autumn's for bringing in the harvest. It is one year and one household, and each month does its share of the work. The verse reads the whole year the same way, as the working parts of a single offering, with each season handed its task.

जब देवताओं ने पुरुष को हवि बनाकर यज्ञ रचा, तब वसंत उसका घी था, ग्रीष्म उसकी समिधा और शरद स्वयं हवि।
देवता एक यज्ञ करते हैं, और जो वे अर्पित करते हैं वह पुरुष है, विश्व-पुरुष। फिर हर ऋतु उसमें अपना भाग लेती है। वसंत वह घी है जो लौ को ऊँचा उठाने के लिए डाला जाता है। ग्रीष्म वह ईंधन है जो आग को जलाए रखता है। शरद वह हवि है जो अग्नि में रखी जाती है, जिसे सायण इस अनुष्ठान के अन्न के पुरोडाश मानते हैं। सायण यह भी कहते हैं कि तब बाहर अर्पित करने को कुछ भी नहीं था, इसलिए देवताओं ने यह यज्ञ मन में किया। उन्होंने पहले पुरुष को हवि ठहराया, फिर हर ऋतु को उसकी भूमिका सौंपी।
किसी खेतिहर घर की रसोई में दीवार पर टँगे पंचांग की कल्पना कीजिए। वसंत का पन्ना बुवाई के लिए चिह्नित है, ग्रीष्म का लकड़ी काटने के लिए, और शरद का फसल घर लाने के लिए। वर्ष एक ही है और घर भी एक ही, और हर महीना काम में अपना हिस्सा निभाता है। यह मंत्र पूरे वर्ष को इसी तरह देखता है, एक ही हवि के काम करते अंगों के रूप में, जिसमें हर ऋतु को उसका काम सौंपा गया है।
