Viraj and the Second Birth

Rig Veda 10.90.5

Meaning · English

From him Viraj was born, and from Viraj the Person was born again. Once born, he reached past it, behind the earth and before it.

The Person first gives rise to Viraj, the wide, shining order of the world, a body large enough to hold everything. Then the Person is born again out of that body, as its living self. Source and product turn in a circle: what he made becomes the place of his own birth. Once born, he exceeds it. Sāyaṇa reads this as the Person becoming gods, animals and humans, then making the earth and the bodies beings live in; Griffith takes the last words as east and west.

A carpenter builds a house with his own hands, then moves in. Soon his tools, his habits and his voice fill every room and spill out onto the porch and the yard. The house is the world-body he made. His living in it is his second birth. The overflow is how he exceeds it.
