Meaning · English
With three quarters Purusha rose on high; one quarter of him came to be here again. From there he spread every way, over what eats and what does not.
Purusha is the cosmic person, the one body the world is made from. His parts are counted as feet, the way a four-legged animal has four. Three of them rise upward, beyond the world's reach. One comes to be here, and the word 'again' hints that this coming down happens more than once. From that one part he strides out in every direction. Everything he covers falls into two kinds: what eats, meaning living things, and what does not eat, like stone and water.
Picture a mountain whose peak sits above a bank of cloud. From the village, only the lower slopes show, and they run out on every side, under grazing goats and bare rock alike. The world is the visible slope of Purusha. Most of him stays above, and the part below spreads under everything, living or not.
