One Quarter Here Below
Rig Veda 10.90.3
Meaning · English
Such is the measure of his greatness, and the Person is larger still. All beings are one quarter of him; three quarters of him are deathless in the sky.
Everything named so far, all that has been and will be, is only the reach of his greatness. The Person himself is larger than that reach. Then comes a proportion. Every living thing taken together is one quarter of him; the word for quarter is also the word for foot. The other three quarters are deathless and stay in heaven, never entering birth and death. Sāyaṇa takes greatness as his outward display, with his true self beyond it.
A glass is poured from a full jug of water. The glass fills to the brim, yet three quarters of the water is still in the jug, the same water, untouched. The full glass is the whole world of beings; the jug is the Person, who gives a share without being used up or changed.
