Meaning · English
The Person is all of this: whatever has been and whatever will be. He is lord of the deathless, and through food he grows out beyond himself.
The Purusha, the cosmic person, is named as everything at once. That is not only what exists now. It is also all that has already happened and all that has not yet come. Time does not sit outside him. He is also lord of immortality, the deathless state. The last line is harder. Sāyaṇa reads it as the Person growing past his hidden state into the visible world, so that beings have food to live on. Others read it as lordship over all that lives by eating.
Think of a tree in spring. The old wood at its core, laid down in years past, and the buds not yet open at the tips are all one tree. It keeps pushing outward, fed by what its roots take in. So the Person holds past and future in one body, and spreads into the visible world through food.
