The Thousand-Headed Person
Rig Veda 10.90.1
Meaning · English
The Person has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. He wrapped the earth all around and stood out past it by the width of ten fingers.
A thousand is not a count here. It stands for numberless. Sāyaṇa reads it this way: the heads, eyes and feet of every living being belong to this one Person, because every creature lies inside his body. Then he wraps the whole earth round and still reaches past it. Ten fingers is a small measure pointing to something larger: he is not held within the world he holds. Some later readers take the ten fingers as the space of the heart.
A mother wraps her newborn in a large shawl. It covers the child all round, head to toe, and its edge still hangs past the small feet. The child is the world; the shawl is the Person, holding all of it and not used up by it, with cloth to spare.
