Meaning · English
The Person has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. He wrapped the earth all around and stood out past it by the width of ten fingers.
The Person is all of this: whatever has been and whatever will be. He is lord of the deathless, and through food he grows out beyond himself.
Such is the measure of his greatness, and the Person is larger still. All beings are one quarter of him; three quarters of him are deathless in the sky.
With three quarters Purusha rose on high; one quarter of him came to be here again. From there he spread every way, over what eats and what does not.
From him Viraj was born, and from Viraj the Person was born again. Once born, he reached past it, behind the earth and before it.
When the gods spread out the sacrifice with the Purusha as the offering, spring was its clarified butter, summer its firewood, and autumn the offering itself.
On the strewn grass they sprinkled him as the sacrifice, the Person born at the very beginning. With him the gods worshipped, and the Sadhyas, and the seers.
From that sacrifice in which everything was offered, the speckled butter was gathered. He made the animals of the wind, those of the forest and those of the village.
From that sacrifice where everything was offered, the verses and the chants were born. The meters were born from it; from it the formulas came to be.
From that offering horses were born, and every animal with teeth in both jaws. Cattle were born from it; from it came goats and sheep.
When they divided the Person, into how many parts did they shape him? What was his mouth? What were his two arms? What are his thighs and feet called?
The Brahmin was his mouth; the Rajanya was made from his two arms. His thighs became the Vaishya; from his feet the Shudra was born.
The Moon was born from his mind; the Sun arose from his eye. Indra and Agni came from his mouth, and from his breath Vayu was born.
From his navel came the middle air, from his head the sky took shape, from his feet the earth, from his ear the directions. So they arranged the worlds.
Seven sticks were set around the fire, and three times seven pieces of fuel were made ready, when the gods, spreading out the sacrifice, bound the Purusha as its victim.
Through sacrifice the gods sacrificed the sacrifice. These were the first laws. Those great ones reached the vault of heaven, where the Sadhyas, gods of earlier times, live.
