Gods From Mind and Breath

Meaning · English
The Moon was born from his mind; the Sun arose from his eye. Indra and Agni came from his mouth, and from his breath Vayu was born.
Purusha, the cosmic person, is still being divided. Earlier portions gave sacred verses, animals and the classes of people. Now the gods come from him too. The Moon rises from his mind and the Sun from his eye. Indra, king of the gods, and Agni, the god of fire, come from his mouth. Vayu, the wind, comes from his breath. Each power inside the person becomes a power in the sky. Sāyaṇa reads it the same way: the gods share one source with everything else.
On a cold morning, breath leaves the mouth and hangs in the air as a small cloud. For a moment, what was inside the body is plainly part of the weather. The verse sees the whole sky this way. The wind is that person's breath, the Sun his eye and the Moon his mind, now standing outside him.
